A mission rooted in community

Located in Harlan, Iowa, Myrtue Medical Center is a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital serving Shelby County and surrounding communities through its main campus and five rural health clinics. Myrtue provides comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and specialty care — including one of the few remaining OBGYN programs in its region. The hospital has been recognized among the nation’s top 20 Critical Access Hospitals for quality and patient perspective, financial stability, and market share.

For CFO Kristy Hansen, every decision ties back to Myrtue’s mission to provide high-quality, local care. “We want patients to be able to see their provider here, give birth here, and receive follow-up care here,” she said. “Keeping everything local is incredibly important to us.

That same commitment extends to how the hospital manages its finances. With a lean team of three supporting a growing network of clinics and facilities, Hansen prioritizes transparency, accountability, and efficient use of resources. Recent capital initiatives — including a $7.4 million Emergency Department expansion and a $22 million construction project to enhance patient care areas — demonstrate that commitment.

Moving beyond complexity

As part of the University of Iowa Epic Connect group, Myrtue’s financial systems were historically tied to the broader network’s technology decisions. Their previous ERP Enterprise Resource Planning System was overly complex — requiring external support to access even basic information.

“It was way too complicated to operate and to get any information out of,” Hansen recalled. “We constantly had to go back to the University for reporting, which slowed things down.”

Determined to find something more intuitive, Hansen began looking for an ERP that would put her team directly in control of their data.

Ease of navigation, visibility, and self-service were what set Multiview apart. “It’s so easy to move around in the system,” Hansen noted. “If I’m reviewing the financials and something looks off, I can click right into it, see the invoices, and export what I need in seconds.”

The accessibility and flexibility she saw in Multiview made the decision clear — and soon, more of the University of Iowa Connect group hospitals followed her lead in adopting it.

Implementation that worked — virtually

Myrtue’s implementation experience was efficient and highly collaborative. Working closely with the Multiview team, Hansen’s small finance group quickly embraced the virtual format — appreciating the flexibility of recorded sessions and on-demand learning resources they could revisit any time.

“The implementation team was incredibly helpful,” Hansen shared. “If we had questions, they were answered quickly, and we could always go back and review the training videos when needed.”

During implementation, Myrtue’s leaders also built out customized workflows and approval structures aligned with hospital policies. “That’s where we established all of our documented approval processes,” Hansen said. “Everything from requisitions to purchase orders follows a clear workflow, which ensures accountability and consistency across departments.”

The result was a smooth go-live with minimal disruption — and a foundation that continues to support operational excellence years later.

Integration and collaboration

As part of the University of Iowa Connect group, Myrtue worked closely with Multiview and Epic to ensure seamless data integration between systems. Hansen’s team established a simple weekly process to confirm that financial data from Epic transfers accurately into Multiview — a proactive step that helps maintain reliability and real-time visibility.

“The Epic interface brings in a lot of valuable data,” Hansen noted. “Now we’re focused on using that data better — building dashboards and learning more about what’s possible through new training.”

Beyond Epic, Myrtue’s finance operations also integrate with UKG (Kronos) for payroll and human resources, creating a unified view of both clinical and financial information.

Hansen credits Multiview’s consistent partnership model — including a dedicated client success representative who supports all hospitals in the Connect group — with strengthening collaboration across the network.

“It makes it easy for us to share learnings, solve challenges together, and keep improving,” she said.

Efficiency gains across the board

Multiview has helped Hansen’s team achieve measurable results across key financial processes:

  • Budgeting: “We’ve cut budgeting time by roughly 75% and improved accuracy,” Hansen shared. “Being able to add notes directly into the system means I can always go back and see why a change was made.”
  • Accounts Payable: Automated workflows and electronic approvals have made AP faster and more auditable. Senior leaders across the board find it easy to review and approve purchases.
  • Fixed Asset Management: Myrtue tracks and manages all capital projects within Multiview, giving the team real-time visibility into active and historical investments. Hansen’s team can easily pull project-level data and reports, supporting stronger capital planning and long-term stewardship.
  • Month-End Close: Financials are completed 7–10 days earlier, giving Hansen’s team more time to review and prepare for board reporting.
  • Workload Balance: With automation streamlining repetitive work, the team has gained roughly 20% in efficiency; creating more time for analysis and strategic planning.

Data at their fingertips

For Hansen, one of Multiview’s biggest advantages is accessibility. “If something doesn’t look right, I can click right into the account, see the invoice, and question it immediately — it’s right at our fingertips.”

That accessibility extends to capital planning and project tracking. “With fixed asset management, it’s easy to pull reports by department or project,” Hansen explained. “When we review recent construction and renovation projects, I can instantly pull the full history of every major capital project the hospital has completed.”

From financial insight to community impact

For Hansen, financial stewardship isn’t just about efficiency — it’s about purpose. “What I do is make sure there’s money there so physicians and staff can take care of patients,” she said. “This is my community. My family’s here. My grandkids are here. My role is to make sure we have the resources to care for this community’s health needs.”

Multiview, she added, gives her the visibility and confidence to do just that. “It gives me easy access to the information I need so we can provide our teams with the resources they need to fulfill our mission.”
